Juicy Brew

Juicy Brew is a plant-based restaurant that offers dine in as well as grab and go options. They are open for lunch and dinner at the Kaimuki location. The chefs are creative with the food menu and the presentation for each dish is colorful and pretty. Their flavors are on the lighter side for me since I like a lot of sauce and seasonings in my food but this was an option for eating healthy. I enjoyed the soba salad with tofu poke and the banh mi style tofu burger. Their prices range from $12 - $18 and the portions are reasonable. Since its plant based, I noticed the buns, noodles, and the desserts are more wet/sticky. Overall, the food is not bad. If you're doing a no meat diet or prefer some healthier alternatives, give this restaurant a try. 

They are located on Waialae Ave between 7th and 8th Ave block across from Finance Factors. The inside is small but they have a few tables and counter seating against the window. The staff are friendly and they gave us some good recommendations on the food and desserts. The desserts are in the fridge so save room to try the tres leches cake with blueberry compote. For parking, there is metered street parking in front of the restaurant or you can find free street parking in the residential areas of Palolo or Kaimuki.

Niu Soft Serve

Niu Soft Serve is a dairy-free ice cream shop located in Mo'ili'ili across from Old Stadium Park. They offer 4 different flavors of soft serve and 2 of the flavors change weekly. The coconut and ube are always available. Some of their weekly flavors consisted of pineapple, orange, strawberry, and chocolate malt. My favorite flavor so far has been the pineapple because it tastes like Dole Whip. Yes, there is a bit of a coconut after taste to all their flavors but it still really good. The soft serve is priced between $6.50 - $7.50 and topping are extra charge. If you're visiting for the first time, I recommend the hot kulolo sundae. If soft serve is not your thing, they also sell shakes, cookies, and pie slices. 

They have tables and chairs inside so you can stay there to enjoy your soft serve. For parking, you can park in front of the store. The parking lot is shared with all the businesses inside Old Stadium Square.

AV Restaurant

AV Restaurant offers a 14-course vegan tasting menu. When you enter the restaurant, you can pick your plate and your chopsticks rest before getting seated. The presentation for all the dishes were amazing. I'm not vegan but there were some dishes I'd want to eat again like the truffle xiao long bao, beet tartare tartlet, and flowerpot pie. The tasting menu is priced at $140 per person and dinner service is 1.5 - 2 hours long.

They are located in Kaimuki between Harding Ave and Waialae Ave. For parking, there are a few parking spaces in front of the restaurant but if that fills up, you can park in the Kaimuki municipal parking lot. They are only open for dinner and reservations are required. I recommend making reservations online 2 weeks in advance. You will also need to provide your credit card information when you reserve. They will check your vaccine card and ID upon entering.

Muki Dogs - CLOSED

Muki Dogs is a hot dog stand that serves plant-based sausage. They are located in Kaimuki at the corner of Waialae Ave and Koko Head Ave. The owner is friendly and says "hi" and talks to everyone who passes by the cart. He recommended that I try "the works" which had all the topping. I was worried about the taste and texture but after taking a bite, it wasn't bad. It was like eating a breakfast sausage patty that didn't have enough salt. I have no plans to give up eating meat but if you are in the Kaimuki area, give this place a try because these hot dogs are good for you. 

The hot dog was under $7 and it takes a few minutes to prepare. They open from Tuesday to Saturday 10am - 3pm and they accept cash and credit. You can follow them on instagram for updates, @mukidogs.

The Works

Downbeat Diner and Lounge - CLOSED

This place is closer toward Chinatown and it's about a 10 minute walk from Bishop Square. Downbeat Diner is really laid back and they offer a variety of sandwiches. They also have vegan options. If you're going with a group, I recommend sharing a basket of fries instead of doing the side order with your sandwich because they give a lot. If you have room for dessert, order the apple fritters.
