Sprout Sandwich Shop

Sprout Sandwich Shop is located in Kaimuki next to the Crack Seed Store. The inside of the shop is small but they have a few stools where you can sit to dine in. They also have a table with a few chairs outside. They are busy between 11:45am-12:30pm so I recommend using the online ordering. The system will text message you when the shop receives your order. A second text message will tell you your order is ready for pick up (usually in 15 minutes after the 1st text message). The parking in Kaimuki is always busy because of the other businesses near by so being able to pull up in front of the shop, walk in, tell them you're picking up for..., and walk out.

The sandwiches are $8-$10 but if you like to add on lots of things, you may end up paying $12. My favorites are the Floater and the Crater. If you're visiting for the first time, try the Floater, it's different because they have apples and brie cheese in it. They accept cash and credit. If Koko Head Ave. has no parking, you might have better luck with parking in the paid lot between 11th and 12th Ave.

Sunrise Restaurant

Sunrise Restaurant is a hole-in-wall restaurant located in the Kapahulu area. They are tucked behind the surf shop with bamboo exteriors on the corner of Herbert Street. Sunrise Restaurant specializes in Okinawan dishes. It's a small restaurant so make a reservation before you go. All the customers dining in spoke Japanese and my table was the only table who spoke English. The waitress was very friendly and she made sure we were okay throughout the dinner. If you order deep fried items or sushi, the food will take a little longer. The chef cooks in the kitchen and comes out to make sushi at the sushi bar. My favorites were the Okinawa soba, ox tail soup, dynamite, and deep fried shrimp. I don't care for pig's feet but if you like it, you should order the pig's feet soup. The prices are reasonable and you get a good amount of food. The restaurant is also BYOB. If you forget your drinks, you can walk over to 7-Eleven and pick some up.

They have 3 parking spaces in the front for customer. The stall are at different angles so please be considerate of the other customers and park inside the lines. If your car is crooked, the owner will ask you to adjust your car so other people can get into the stalls. Depending on what time you go, you might be able to find free street parking on Herbert Street.

Urban Bistro - CLOSED

Urban Bistro is located near Ala Moana in a new 3-story building called the 808 Center. If you're on Rycroft Street, you have to walk up the steps, and go through the building to see the entrance of the restaurant. The interior and exterior of the restaurant matches with the building's design; very modern. The menu is creative but most of the dishes were under seasoned and some of the food was dry. I felt like the servers ignored us because they would walk by our table and not have eye contact. Our water cups only got filled once during the dinner. It is a new restaurant so I'm sure they are working out their kinks. Our food came out fast and I enjoyed the chicken and pudding and the roasted garlic creme brulee. A small warning, the creme brulee is very garlicky but it is delicious and a must try.

The pricing is reasonable for the amount of food you get. I recommend doing family style so you can try more items on their menu. It's BYOB right now. This is also a no tip restaurant; the tip is included in the price of each dish. It's a cool looking restaurant with a different concept and it's worth trying so if you are in the area, check it out. The parking structure is not open yet so it's street parking only. Since the restaurant is small, make a reservation in advance.
