Cafe Kaila

If you're looking for a tasty homemade breakfast, you need to check this place out. Their prices are reasonable and the portions are big. The taste of their food might be a little salty for some people but I like salt in my food so I thought it was perfect. The downside to this place is the wait time. I came on a weekend and I waited for about 25 minutes. If you go on a weekday it should be less crowded.

Marukame Udon

Say hello to cheap eats! This Japanese cafeteria style udon shop in the heart of Waikiki is awesome. If you drive down Kuhio Ave and you see a long line, it's probably for this place. The wait time can run anywhere from 20-50 minutes. 50 minutes sounds like a long time but if you have friends in line, time will go by fast. Once you get inside the restaurant and you see the udon, tempura, and musubi, you won't be grumbling anymore.

The kake udon and the niku udon are my favorite. The soup base for the bukkake udon is a bit too salty for me. The shrimp and sweet potato tempura are excellent. The tempura is super crispy and not oily. I don't recommend the musubi. I think the 7-Eleven ones are better.

Let Them Eat Cupcakes - CLOSED

There are cupcake shops and trucks popping up all around town but my favorite one is Let Them Eat Cupcakes. Do you know why... because they make killer cupcakes! The cake in their cupcakes are moist and flavorful. The frosting is buttery and not overly sweet. A lot of places make their frosting too sweet and I can feel the sugar crunching while I'm eating the cake. The red velvet is their signature cupcake but I didn't like it. If you're one of those daring people, I suggest you try the li hing mango. It sounds weird but it's actually a very interesting combo and it works. My favorites are chocolate and guava.

If you're planning on getting some of these, I highly recommend calling the shop in the morning to place an order and then picking them up in the afternoon. They usually sell out around 2PM.

Fort Street Cafe

If you like garlic chicken you'll love this place. The tagline on their shirts' say "home of the garlic chicken." Most of the dishes on their menu are Vietnamese but they also have some Thai dishes.

If you go around noon, there's usually a line coming out the door. What I like to do is call 5-10 minutes in advance and so when I stand in line, I get my food right after I pay. It minimizes the wait time.

Jun Bo Chinese Restaurant

If you work in downtown and you're looking for an inexpensive and filling lunch, this is the place you want to be. They have big portions and most of the items on their daily special is $6. This restaurant is a hole in the wall. On Merchant Street, there's a Reyn's Rack, you turn into that alley. Yes, it looks a bit sketchy but during the day time, it's safe.

The interior of the restaurant doesn't look so good but you're going there for the food. You can have company lunches here. They have a couple of big tables.
